Hurricane Relief Efforts: Local Resources for Seniors and Caregivers in our Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

North Sarasota, Florida – Town Square University Parkway extends its support to families impacted by Hurricane Milton, recognizing the ongoing challenges they face in the wake of this disaster. In light of the struggles with power outages, food insecurity, and limited essential transportation, we are committed to assisting our members during this difficult time. Community support is vital as we come together to help each other navigate the aftermath and work towards recovery.

Caregivers of individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s encounter a multitude of challenges, including heightened confusion and anxiety, fears of wandering or elopement, and scarce resources that complicate their ability to provide care. Such stressors are exacerbated in crisis situations, where logistical issues like power outages, gas shortages, and debris can hinder access to essential medications and limit communication with family and friends, leaving caregivers more isolated and overwhelmed by their responsibilities.

How can our team help families during this time?

Town Square University Parkway remains committed to supporting seniors and caregivers in our community, with minimal damage to our facility. We are a full resource center, providing connections to local services. Our doors are open to the public, offering free access to air conditioning and Wi-Fi during operational hours to ensure the well-being and comfort of those in need.

We are also offering FREE health assessments by appointment for seniors struggling during this time. These assessments include cognitive, physical, and depression scale tests. All families receiving a free assessment will also receive a free educational book to guide them through their caregiving journey.

FREE Respite Available during Support Groups

Our team is offering two hours of free respite for caregivers during our Support Group tomorrow. Support Group will be held on Tuesday, October 15th at our center off Lockwood Ridge and University Parkway. This is a great way to provide much-needed relief and support for those caring for others. This group not only helps caregivers recharge but also fosters community and connection among individuals sharing similar experiences.

Rescheduled Educational Class

We are postponing the educational class this Wednesday and rescheduling it to Wednesday, October 30th. Please find the updated flyer attached. The new topic for this class is Hurricane Relief for Caregivers. Town Square University Parkway will also be offering FREE respite during this class as well!

Collecting Clothing Donations

Last but not least, Town Square University Parkway is collecting clean and gently used clothing to donate to the seniors at Great American ALF in Bradenton. All donations must be dropped off by Wednesday at 5 PM.  To find out more about this community’s loss and devastation, please see the news story here to find out more: Assisted living resident describes moment floodwaters hit | CNN

Town Square University Parkway

Since opening in March 2023, our center has proudly served as a safe haven for seniors facing cognitive or physical impairments, quickly establishing itself as a vital resource in the Manatee and Sarasota communities. Our adult day care and senior center operates Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. Services include nutritious meals, medication management, medical oversight, engaging activities, one-person transfers, and support groups, all aimed at enriching the lives of our members and providing valuable assistance to caregivers.

Our team is here to help however we can. We are relying on our media partners to share this information and resources with our community.  Seniors and caregivers in our area need help but they don’t know where to look. For more information about our center, free resources, services or hurricane relief efforts please contact Skyler Betts directly at 720-690-3078 or sbetts@townsquare.net
